Snoop Dogg facts:
• Snoop was born in Long Beach, California on October 20,1971 to Verhell Varnado and Beverley Tate. But his father left before he was born, so he was named Calvin Broadus, after his stepfather Cardozar Calvin Broadus.
• Snoop has plenty of famous relatives. He is the nephew of Bootsy collins – the flamboyant bassist who’s played with James Brown, Parliament and Funkadelic, and is the cousin of R&B singers Brandy and Nate Dogg.
• He was given the nickname Snoopy by his mother, as he was a huge fan of the Charlie Brown TV series when he was a child. When he started rapping, he adopted the stage name Snoop Doggy Dogg, which he shortened to just Snoop Dogg in 1996.
• In 1990, Snoop formed a group with fellow rapper Warren G and singer Nate Dogg called 213, in reference to the Long Beach area telephone code. They were in search of a record deal, so Warren G handed a mixtape of their work to his stepbrother Dr Dre, who was so impressed with Snoop’s MCing skills he immediately signed Snoop to his new record label Death Row Records.

Doggystyle has gone on to sell eight million copies across the world.
• Never being one to pass the opportunity to earn some ready cash, Snoop’s lent his name to many products, including a hotdog brand, a malt brew, Chrysler cars, and an anti-virus software programme – with the slogan ‘Hack is Wack!’
• This has clearly paid off for Snoop, as he’s one of the richest rappers out there. Despite not releasing an album in 2010, the Forbes Hip-Hop Cash Kings rich list estimated his earnings as US $15 million for the year.
• Despite his reputation as a ladies’ man, Snoop’s been married to his high school sweetheart Shante Taylor since 1997. However, they did file for divorce in 2004, before reconciling and renewing their vows in 2008.
